If you’ve never been to The Stand Snowballs, it’s easy to overlook. It’s tucked away in the same lot as Coastal Produce on North Cedar Ave. If you do not take the time to find it, you are definitely missing out. That tiny shed is packing a serious flavor punch. We visited for the first time this week and have already been back!
Their flavors are hand-mixed and include some unusual options like Egg Custard, Fireball and Spearmint. Mix and match flavors, add a dollop of their signature marshmallow cream and enjoy your sweet, deliciously cold creation. So far, I’ve tasted Cotton Candy/Blue Raspberry combo with marshmallow cream, Tigers Blood (Strawberry, Watermelon and Coconut) and the Egg Custard flavors. All so delicious! The Egg Custard was tasty and surprisingly not weird at all.
Jeff Chilcote, the owner, is originally from Baltimore, MD where Snowball Stands are on almost every corner. He and his wife, Dorette, met on a beach vacation in South Carolina. They courted, fell in love and he moved to the Lowcountry in 2001. He quickly fell in love with the small town feel of Summerville and has been smitten with the girl and the town ever since. The only thing missing was a snowball stand on every corner. In 2012 they opened The Stand Snowballs to introduce the community to his beloved flavors of his hometown. They have this saying: “It’s a Baltimore thing with Charleston charm.” Jeff laughed as he explained that he’s the “thing” and Dorette is the “charm”.
Together Jeff and Dorette have 5 children and serve the Summerville community through their passion for kids. Jeff is a former youth pastor, currently coaches baseball and drives a school bus. Dorette also works in the school system with special needs children. They volunteer their time working with elementary, middle and high school students. The business currently sponsors the Summerville Little League and has often supported the schools and community with creative fundraisers. It is their hope that the business will continue to grow and will provide another opportunity to mentor high school students in a business atmosphere.
The Stand Snowballs is the perfect reprieve when you’re out and about on a warmer afternoon. Kids love it, it’s affordable, and they have a covered area with picnic tables so you can cool off and enjoy the shade. Looking for a new idea for birthday parties or other events? The covered area with picnic tables is an affordable option for small parties OR they can come to you for events.
Check it out. On North Cedar Avenue between Hwy 78 and the Piggly Wiggly. You will find them there Monday through Saturday until September.
